The San Fransisco Chronicle reports that BP Alternative Energy has bought wind power developer Orion Energy for an undisclosed sum. Orion, a privately held company, has created enough wind projects to power nearly 1,000,000 homes and is developing another 6,000 MW of power in 16 states.
The acquisition strengthens BP's presence in North America as a wind power developer. The company now has the ability to generate about 15,000 MW of power with almost 100 projects across the continent. The scale of its newest U.S. wind farms will be close to 10 times larger than those built in Europe. A strategic alliance with Clipper Windpower will supply BP with up to 4,250 MW of wind turbines over the next five years.
