SAFE Energy Act doesn't make me feel so safe

A group of U.S. business leaders and retired military officers calling themselves the Energy Security Leadership Council have teamed up with Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) and Senator Larry Craig (R-ID) to promote the Securing America's Future Energy (SAFE) Energy Act of 2007, unveiled earlier this month on Capitol Hill.

The legislation includes:

  • Stricter fuel economy standards
  • Expanded domestic oil and natural gas production
  • Accelerated development of long-term renewable energy sources.

A poll conducted by the Council found that 80 percent of the public supports these measures.

It is unfortunate that an accelerated development of renewable energy is negated with increased fossil fuel use. This isn't getting us anywhere towards a cleaner, 21st century energy system. I would not feel "safe" knowing that we were increasing our global warming pollution, dirtying our air and water, and falling behind other nations that forging ahead with renewable energy innovations and technology.
