Terminology Tuesday: Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology generally refers to a field of applied science and technology that control matter on the molecular level - normally 1 to 100 nanometers (one nanometer = one billionth of a meter).

Creating devices smaller than 100 nanometers opens many doors for the development of new ways to capture, store, and transfer energy. According to the Foresight Nanotech Institute:
"Nano engineering could lead to smart windows, energy efficient LEDs and wireless controls. It also could enable highly efficient conductors and superconductors that could eventually replace current transmission facilities."
