Clean Energy Quick Clicks

Vestas Wind Power has announced that it's planning to locate a new research center at an American university. It should be operational in 2009 and employ 80 people in R&D. The specific site is still undecided (I'm hoping they're looking at the Midwest), but the President of Vestas Technology R&D said "If we want to be market leaders, we have to be present and drive the development, where the market is."
  • Michigan may be getting closer to passing a renewable energy standard (RES), which would require a certain percentage of the state's energy to come from renewables sources. However two large utilities - Consumers and DTE - want reforms to Michigan's electric choice law before they'll support an RES. They want the law changed to open up "the supply and generation of power to competition." Or, as DTE says on their website, "...define regulated and choice markets, providing sufficient certainty to invest in new power plants."
  • In cool news: India is releasing four commemorative postage stamps depicting solar energy, wind energy, small hydropower and biomass. I've sent a request to the U.S. Postal Service to create a set too. Apparently I'll receive a reply in 1-2 business days so I'll let you know if they say anything interesting.
