House, Senate Agree on 35 MPG

Late Friday night, the House and Senate agreed to new vehicle efficiency standards, raising them from 25 miles per gallon (MPG) to 35 mpg by 2020 - the first significant increase in 30 years.

The efficiency standard is part of the broader energy bill that also contains proposals to use more biofuels, eliminate tax incentives for the oil industry, and require a certain amount of national energy use to come from renewables. The whole package should be resolved this week.
