Clean Energy "Scam?"

I've been nasty-sick these past few days, which if nothing else gave me time to catch up on my reading. I just finished the Time cover story "The Clean Energy Scam" about biofuels wiping out the rainforests and causing more global warming pollution than oil because of the replacement of forests with soybeans, etc.

I don't think we should abandon biofuels and open up more drilling tomorrow, but this is a good reminder that we need to be watching closely the types of crops we are using for biofuels. On the other hand, biofuels do decrease the need for importing oil and stimulate rural economies. It's the point about destroying vast swaths of forest - areas that store carbon - that gets us in trouble.

I agree - that was a really important article, and kind of a wake up call.

Striking to see that strip of intact forest surrounded by an expanse of soybean fields...!
