South America Recommendations?

I'm 2/3 of the way to my goal of traveling to six continents by the time I'm 30. Next up: South America. Specifically, we're flying in to Santiago, Chile and out of Buenos Aires, Argentina this October. My plan so far is to drink wine and eat beef. Does anyone have any recommendations of where to stay, what to see and do?

I spent a semester in Argentina in the fall of 2005.
If you don't mind bunk bed style sleeping, hostels were very affordable ($5-$8 US / night)

If you'll only be there a week, I would spend 2 days in Mendoza (Province of wine, just across the border from Santiago) and visit the vinyards and wineries. then take an overnight bus to Buenos Aires.

If you have a month or more, I recommend a few days in each of the following: Mendoza, Cordoba (central), Salta and Jujuy (north-west), waterfalls of Iguazul (north-east), Rosario (east), Mar de Plata, San Carlos de Bariloche (west), Tierra Del Fuego, then on to Buenos Aires for at least a week.

Buses between cities are inexpensive, in towns taxis are inexpensive, food and wine is almost always inexpensive, it's fantastic

Awesome THANKS! We'll be in both cities about five days. I've gotten the bus recommendation a few times but my husband is 6'4" and the thought of sitting on a bus that long isn't exactly appealing. We'll have to see...

Thanks for leaving me your URL on stumble.

Good luck with your goal. My wife was born in Santiago. I hear it's beautiful.
